Oil spill leaking from storm drain flows into South Saskatchewan River

Jun 15, 2012 | 7:06 AM

Clean up crews with the City of Saskatoon have been busy dealing with an oil spill leaking into the Saskatchewan River.

At about 5:30 p.m. on Thursday night, crews from the Ministry of Environment and the City of Saskatoon responded to a call about oil leaking into the river at 33rd Street and Spadina Crescent. The Saskatoon Fire Department arrived around 11 p.m. to help and worked well into this morning to stop the leak coming out of a city storm sewer.

“We're trying to set up a screen or something that will stop larger chunks of the product from getting into the river,” said Glenn Ledray, battallion chief with the Saskatoon fire department.

Ledray said although crews have been treating this like an oil spill, that isn't confirmed.
