Saskatchewan school boards looking to help potential trustees

The Saskatchewan School Boards Association is sending potential board trustees to school.

In an effort to increase the number of candidates, the association is holding a specialized workshop ahead of fall municipal and school board elections.

“We would like to see an increase in people putting their names forward. Elections are a very healthy and important part of the democratic process,” said Sandi Urban-Hall, president of the Saskatchewan School Boards Association.

This is the first time there has been any type of schooling for potential school board members. Urban-Hall said she hopes it will help people who are too intimated to run for trustee or have lots of questions.

The Campaign School for Candidates is set to be held Aug.15 in Saskatoon. It will walk potential candidates through the role and responsibilities of school board members, how to run an election campaign and how to get better at public speaking.

“We wanted to give people an opportunity to have a safe place to ask the questions: What do you do? How much work is it?” Urban-Hall said.

The hope is the workshop will spark people's interest in local politics, she said.

“It's the most grassroots, direct way to serve and it is very, very rewarding.”

School board trustees will be elected for a four-year term.
