Upgrades coming to busy intersection

Jun 12, 2012 | 12:58 PM

The city is in the process of upgrading one of its busiest intersections.

The intersection of 15th Street and Sixth Avenue East is currently being updated to give better access to the newer regions of the Cornerstone district.

At the same time, the city is planning on improving the surfaces to better deal with the increasing wear of growing traffic counts.

Drivers will have noticed the construction of the new approach into cornerstone at the south east corner of the intersection.

City director of planning and projects Scott Golding said it will allow only cars traveling north to turn right into the complex. While cars are leaving they will only be able to leave by going north towards the intersection.

“We’re going to be building on later in the summer here an entrance to Cornerstone and it’ll be similar to the Superstore, right in, right,” he said.”

That work is being done privately.

Meanwhile, the city is preparing to upgrade the surface to concrete, or whitetopping surfaces in favour of the current asphalt because concrete can withstand much more traffic for longer timespans.
This year, it will only be on the portion of 15th Street East.

“We’re looking at a little bit of work closer to the intersection on the eastbound approach on the portion of 15th Street (East) that is in front of Superstore,” he said.

Golding said the rest of the intersection does not have a solid timeline as it is only in the long-term planning phases.

“We’re devising some plans for the longer term to finish that off,” he said. “We don’t have a specific timeline for right now it’s going to depend on a few things.”

“We’ve got to take a look at capacity from other directions and do a little bit of underground repairs there. I’m hoping later this year to have a five-year plan established and formalized.”

There are several improvements beyond resurfacing. They include closing the median on 6th Street East that allows turning just north of the intersection. As well some medians will be altered to allow for better traffic flow, especially during left hand turns.
