Riders converge in Saskatoon

Jun 8, 2012 | 11:45 AM

It's the day Saskatchewan Roughrider fans in Saskatoon have been waiting for during this long off-season.

The Riders will be in Saskatoon on Saturday.

The day will start off with a shareholders meeting at 10a.m. at the Hilton Hotel.

“Later in the day, in the afternoon, we're out at the University of Saskatchewan. We have an autograph session from 1:00 until 1:30 with all the players and practice is at 1:45,” said Riders president and chief executive officer Jim Hopson.

The practice is open for fans to come watch in an intimate setting.

“They can get right up close and mingle with the players. The way the field is set up, you're right close to everything that's happening,” said Hopson.

“You can hear the coaches coaching and you can hear the players, it's a fun day and we always look forward to it.”

Riders recorded its second highest profits ever last year

Fans across the province know it was a less than stellar season last year for the Riders, but that didn't show at the sales office.

The team recorded its second highest profits ever at $3.8 million — second only to the centennial year which generated $6.6 million.

“The rest of the teams look at that with envy, thinking here we are with the worst record in the league and really, a difficult year, but still our fans supported us,” said Hopson.

“This year we're looking forward to not only having another good year at the bank, but a good year on the field.”

Part of the sales will be dependant on the new jerseys that just came out, which have been selling very well so far across the province.
