Coben wins second straight Senior Lobstick

Jun 7, 2012 | 11:06 PM

After finishing runner-up at the May Day Masters in Prince Albert over the May long weekend, Delisle’s Colin Coben ran away with the Conexus Senior Men’s Lobstick, beating the field by nine strokes.

His best round was his last, a dazzling 67 to seal the deal Thursday. He started off the tournament strong with a 70, then got better each round from there with a 68 on Wednesday.

Nursing a six shot lead heading into Thursday, the biggest thing Coben wanted to be was relaxed out on the course.

“I had a six shot lead but you just want to be comfortable when you’re out there,” said Coben. “I know all the guys, there’s always good groups.”

Coben was happy with his work on the tee boxes and knew he had to be solid again in that area to capture another lobstick.

“I had been hitting the tee shots good, so as long as you can keep doing the same thing, it should stay in play,” said Coben. “The fairways are big up here, but it doesn’t take much to get offline. I hit the tee ball good and my putter was good. You get under par and it’s hard (to be beat), somebody has to shoot 63 to tie ya, and that doesn’t happen up here.”

Coben was able to be very effective on the greens as well. He was an even par after 10 holes, but finished with a four-under 67 after putting home four birdies.

“The course is awesome and the greens are as good as I’ve ever seen them at this time of the year,” said Coben. “You feel like you can make a putt on them.”

Coben will also trying his hand at the Conexus Men's Lobstick starting on June 11 in Waskesiu, a tournament he's “really excited for.”

Rick Hillstad finished second with a 214 three-day total, nine above Coben’s 205.

Frank Hilbert won the Super Senior Championship Flight, edging out Art Goodwin by one stroke, 228-229.
