Raiders vs Rebels

Pre-game Summary

After a wild shootout win Wednesday in Edmonton, the Prince Albert Raiders continued their central division road trip with a stop in Red Deer to face the rolling Rebels.

The last time these two teams faced off was October 16th in Red Deer and not only did it end in a 6-2 loss for the visiting Raiders, it also ended in a line brawl.

The Raiders (10-15-2-2) are sitting just outside the playoff picture and are looking for a successful road trip against tough central division opponents to gain some much needed points.  The Rebels (18-7-1-2) are rolling themselves who have 3 wins and a shootout loss in their last 4 games.

Game Summary

1st period

The Raiders were off to a bad start taking two consecutive penalties early in the game.  After the first successful kill, the Rebels made them pay with their second opportunity.  John Persson opened the scoring at 8:02 on the powerplay, taking advantage of the Raiders struggling penalty kill.

NHL top prospect Ryan Nugent-Hopkins assisted on the Persson goal, extending his four game point streak to five.

Persson returned the favour to Nugent-Hopkins, setting up his eighth goal of the season at the 11:26 mark in the first.

The Raiders would get their own man advantage at 15:08, but were unsuccessful against a Rebels penalty kill ranked second best in the league with an incredible success rate of 92% on home ice.

Shots after one period, the Raiders-8; the Rebels-12.

2nd period

Red Deer continued to roll in the second period as Adam Kambeitz made it 3-0 at the 9:00 minute mark.  Kambeitz was the benefactor during a scramble in front of Raiders goalie Jamie Tucker, netting his 10th of the year and 4th against the Raiders.

Meanwhile, Jamie Tucker's counterpart Darcy Kuemper of the Rebels turned away all of the Raiders 16 second-period shots, leaving the Raiders with nothing to show for after out-shooting the Rebels 16-8.

Darcy Kuemper leads all WHL goalies with a 1.72 GAA, .936% SP, four shut outs, and 18 wins in 25 games played.

Shots after two periods, the Raiders-24; the Rebels-20

3rd period

No scoring in the 3rd period.

The Raiders continued to press the Rebels in the third out shooting them 9-5 but it wasn't enough against the league's top goaltender in Red Deer's Darcy Kuemper, who turned away all 33 shots for his 5th shut out of the year.

With the win, Red Deer jumps over idle Kootenay to take first place in the Central Division.

Shots after three periods, the Raiders-33; the Rebels-25
