Fans get glimpse of 2012 Sask. Roughriders team

A few dozen fans got their first look at the 2012 Saskatchewan Roughriders.

The team took to the field at Mosaic Stadium Wednesday for the first day of mini-camp.

This is the first time the team has ever hosted a mini-camp. Teams have been allowed to host them since last year, when the new collective bargaining agreement came into effect.

However, most teams opted not to hold one last year because of time restraints.

“We will hit the ground running in training camp, just because of the little things,” said Roughriders Head Coach Corey Chamblin explaning why the practices are important for the team. “It's a little different you communicate with guys over the phone than in person.”

It didn't take long for Chamblin to show off his energy. He was seen buzzing around the field all morning and afternoon. Giving input to just about every player.

“Young energetic guy,” said Roughriders Quarterback Darian Durant of Chamblin, ” Run around, demonstrate drills and show guys how to do it the right way”

One big question coming into training camp in about a month is who will back up Durant. Those looking to fill out the depth chart were in Florida for a mini-camp a few weeks back.

“Now they come up here, they get to see Weston (Dressler) and Chris (Getzlaf).” Said Roughriders Offensive Coordinator Bob Dyce, adding it will help them learn some of the differences between the American and Canadian game. “So when they do come into rookie camp at the end of may, they're going full speed.”

Another major theme of the day, was putting last years disastrous season behind them.

“I set last year away a long time ago,” said Roughriders Defensive Back Lance Frazier. “We're starting over fresh, we're starting over new.”

The two day mini-camp wraps up Thursday morning in Moose Jaw at the field house. Practice starts at 9:30am.
