La Ronge Chamber could be folding

Apr 12, 2012 | 11:39 AM

The clock could be ticking for the La Ronge Chamber of Commerce.

“We thought we would let it go a little while longer, you know a month or two maybe at the most,” said Chamber President Gary Veteri.

“Attendance at the Chamber meetings has been very poor. It’s not uncommon to have only three or four people show up on a given night.”

“It's frustrating to show up for meetings and it's hard to plan and organize when you don't have a group of people to work with,” he added.

Among the projects Veteri said he would like to work is promoting local shopping and keeping the businesses they do have going because a lot of people tend to head south to Prince Albert or Saskatoon.

Membership turnout was at its peak two years ago when there was talk of a Wal Mart coming to La Ronge.

Al Loke even went so far as to circulate a petition. The proposal was eventually quashed by the Chamber.and Veteri said there has been no further discussion about the proposal since then.

“My hat’s off to Al Loke. He got people out that time. They were in the same position I am now and that was one way he got people out. I've never seen such a crowd of people at one meeting,” said Veteri.

The Chamber plans to wait another couple months to see if attendance turns around, before making any final decisions.
