City boundaries updated

Apr 12, 2012 | 6:29 AM

The City of Prince Albert now includes in its boundaries an additional 330 acres in the southeast, just south of Marquis Road.

The transfer of land to within the city’s boundaries from the neighbouring Rural Municipality of Prince Albert occurred at the beginning of the year.

At the last executive committee meeting councillors agreed to pay for the transfer as an out-of-budget expense.

“What we’re doing is formalizing publically what council has agreed to and has actually paid to the R.M.,” said city manager Robert Cotterill.

“It’s a done deal and the cheque has already been issued.”

That agreement will have to be ratified officially at the next city council meeting.

The city is required to pay the municipality for tax revenues lost by the changing boundaries.

City moving forward with development plans

The land in question is controversial because of city plans to use some of it for commercial purposes and the local neighbourhood’s opposition to the move.

City manager Robert Cotterill said the first step in a process is having city staff create a detailed report on land, now that it’s within the city’s boundaries.

He said the report will deal with how to develop the land in the future.

“That land is within the city limits and now I’ve asked staff to provide me with a report with the next steps to move forward to either work with the existing landowners to develop those lands or for us to acquire them and do it ourselves,” he said.

Cotterill said until that’s complete there wouldn’t be any concrete plans for the land.

As well, any development would still be subject to public hearings and council approval, though the city has in the past stressed that specific land is the most viable in the city for development.
