Finding gaps in food help

Nov 29, 2010 | 3:26 PM

Addressing the issue of hunger is key for one Prince Albert based organization.

The Prince Albert Food Coalition is bringing together groups from around the city under a single umbrella called Food for Prince Albert, Gaps and Overlaps, to discuss some of the shortfalls.

“I’ve had people indicate to me that they keep seeing people that are still hungry, that aren’t getting food,” said Victoria Jurgens, chairwoman of the food coalition.

“The concern is that we have hungry people in this community and all of these people are trying to allocate hunger and by working together we can do an even better job than what we are doing now.

“What we are doing is gathering everybody that provides food in our community that provides food at cost, below cost or for no money, in our community.”

Jurgens said she expects about 15 organizations to be involved in Food for Prince Albert, including the Salvation Army, Smart Families and Prince Albert Share-A-Meal/Food Bank.

By gathering people together, Jurgens said they will be able to better see where food is being successfully distributed as well as learn who is providing different services and areas where expansion is needed.

“Hunger is an issue that spans a diversity of demographics and cultural groups and it’s bigger than any one organization can handle alone,” she said.

The first meeting will take place early in the new year.
