Vampire movie filming in Dundurn

Feb 16, 2012 | 12:48 PM

People in Dundurn are hearing plenty of “lights, camera, action” after their town was chosen as the setting for a new vampire movie written, directed and produced out of Saskatoon.

Rufus is set in a fictitious mid-western town, and producer Anand Ramayya said director David Schultz visited many towns before choosing Dundurn.

“I think it really spoke to him and felt like it could be the small town where this vampire would try to find himself,” said Ramayya.

It was a good fit for other reasons including a tax incentive because the movie is filmed in a rural community 40 km outside of any major city. Unfortunately, filming in a rural community also costs more so the crew will likely break even.

The film features a wide range of new and veteran actors including Canadian actress Kelly Rowan from the hit show ‘The O.C.’

“We were very fortunate, she had worked with Dave Schultz on his first film and so there was an existing relationship there,” Ramayya said.

The crew has 60 members and they hired as many local extras as they could.

“There actually seems to be a bit of a theatre bug in this town so I was quite surprised at how many people have theatre background,” he commented.

Ramayya plans on entering the film into festivals, but adds it does have a mainstream appeal.
