Longtime CFL players Barrin Simpson, Omarr Morgan eager to win first Grey Cup

They have 21 years experience combined and no Grey Cup rings to show for it. On Sunday, Riders defensive back Omarr Morgan and linebacker Barrin Simpson are hoping to end their string of bad luck when it comes to the championship game.

Simpson appeared in two Grey Cups, one as a B.C. Lion, the other as a member of the 2007 Winnipeg Blue Bombers. The Bombers, of course, lost to the Roughriders.

That is where Omarr Morgan’s hard luck story starts. Morgan, who is in his 11th season in the Canadian Football League, was an Edmonton Eskimo in 2007. It was also the only year he wasn’t a Roughrider. Last year was actually the first Grey Cup game Morgan has ever played and his luck didn’t change as he was devastated with a defeat at the hands of the Montreal Alouettes.

Simpson says the tandem definitely don’t ignore their lack of Grey Cup jewelry.

“We talk about it all the time. We talked about at training camp. We talked about at the mid-point of the season. We talked about it at the beginning of the playoffs. We’re like, ‘Man this is the year we really want to win this.’ “

Simpson also knows this could be their last chance at a title.

“You have to take advantage of every opportunity you get to play in this game and get the opportunity to hoist that cup, so this is huge,” said Simpson.

Morgan admits to being beyond excited coming out of the tunnel at last year’s Grey Cup and knows this year will be a lot different after experiencing his first.

“It’s just football and after all the hype goes away and on Sunday, at 4:30, it’s football.”

At around 9 p.m. on Sunday, both players hope they can add Grey Cup championship to their all-ready illustrious careers.
