High speed chase sends man to jail

Jan 18, 2012 | 2:13 PM

A 28-year-old man who led police on a harrowing high-speed chase around Prince Albert last week has been sentenced to three months in jail.

Barry Dean Heimbecker of Prince Albert pleaded not guilty, but was later sentenced to three months to be served in a Saskatchewan correctional centre.

He was facing numerous charges including dangerous driving, failing to stop for police, breaking and entering and assault. He also faced five counts of breach of probation.

It all started on Jan. 11 when Prince Albert police responded to an ongoing complaint of assault and breach of probation, along with out-of-jurisdiction warrants.

Heimbecker left the scene shortly before police arrived.

His vehicle was later located in the area of 15th Street and Sixth Ave West.

After fleeing police, Heimbecker led them on a high-speed chase across the city, reaching speeds of approximately 100km/h. At one point, he was traveling north on Sixth Avenue East while in the southbound lane, forcing oncoming traffic to take evasive action.

Stop sticks were finally used, and the vehicle came to a stop in the 1700 block of 14th Street West.

Both the driver and a passenger were forcibly removed from the vehicle by patrol officers with the help of the canine unit.

The 22-year-old passenger in the car, Tyson Derryk Lafond has not yet been sentenced but will make his next court appearance on Feb. 15.
