Siast students to pay for parking

Jan 6, 2012 | 1:20 PM

Students at Siast will be adding one more expense to their budgets this year.

As of Jan. 3 students, staff, and visitors will be charged for parking.

Now students have to pay two dollars a day to park on campus.

That isn't sitting well with some students, who feel they already pay high tuition costs and that parking should be included.

Siast Woodland campus director Larry Fladager said, “Siast as an organization made a decision some time ago to implement paid parking, and that’s consistent with almost all post-secondary institutions.”

The campus has had very few complaints and a few inquiries, he said.

“Things have gone very smoothly so far,” Fladager said, adding two dollars a day is pretty affordable.

Fladager said the next step is to implement declining balance cards which will allow students to put as much money as they need onto a card.

Although some students are unhappy with the paid parking, Fladager said they had plenty of time and warning.

The money collected from the parking fees will help create revenue that will go towards parking upgrades and special projects on campus.
