Morley Watson remains positive about historic meeting

Jan 2, 2012 | 4:00 PM

The Interim Chief of the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations (FSIN) is keeping as positive as he can about an upcoming, historical meeting between Ottawa and the country's First Nations leaders.

That positive attitude comes despite what Morley Watson calls a lack of respect.

“If there was any respect to begin with we wouldn’t be in the situation that we are today and that’s probably across Canada,” said Watson.

On the heels of international coverage of Ottawa's reaction to Attawapiskat – Watson says there needs to be change – big change.

“We’re hoping of some ground-breaking news to come out of January and hopefully something that will help our first nation communities build on,” said Watson. “Help build the young people that are in the communities and hopefully a better future for all concerned.”

The so-called Crown/First Nations Gathering takes place Jan. 24 but it took many, many months to get the Prime Minister to meet with assembled chiefs. In fact – this will be Stephen harper's first appearance with these chiefs since Ottawa's apology over residential schools

An apology many first nations now say sounds hollow without proper follow up.
