Rev. Sandy Scott from St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church in Prince Albert has a growing list of titles and as that list expands, so do his honors.

Captain Scott was promoted to Major Scott for his service with a team of six Canadian chaplains in Afghanistan from Sept. 29, 2009 to Apr. 10, 2010.

Now he will be awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for his service with the Canadian Military in Afghanistan.

“It’s given to Canadian services personal who serve in particular situations and bring honor to their country, to their trade and to themselves,” Scott said.

“We had a team of six chaplains … we had a rally strong team and I think that the skills that we have and the dedication of the team is reflected in the fact that some of us were decorated.”

Nominated by the Operational Mentor and Liaison Team and the Military Police Company, Scott found out this year he was to be decorated as well.

“I received a preliminary call in the July this year — it takes a long time to process the awards. I had no idea that I’d been nominated and when the process was complete I was told in July,” Scott said.

“I’m really humbled. It’s not just about me it’s about the soldiers that I served with and worked with and it’s about the chaplains that I was deployed with.”

A definite date has not been set for the official ceremony, but within the next few months Scott will be decorated at Rideau Hall in Ottawa in a ceremony with the governor general.

Among his list of titles, Scott continues to serve at his parish here in Prince Albert, as Reverend Scott of St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, Padre for the Royal Canadian Legion and also the Chaplain for the Prince Albert Police Service.

Sgt. Kelly McLean spoke on behalf of the Prince Albert Police Service congratulating Scott on his award.

“This is something that is very important to us … He faced conflict, casualties and death,” McLean said.

“We join with his parish and with the community in recognizing his outstanding service to our community and to our country.”

Earlier this summer Sgt. Lee Bibby, who was born and raised in Prince Albert, also received the Meritorious Service Medal, being recognized after a rescue performed in Ontario’s Killarney provincial park.
