Sask. government donates $250,000 to Red Cross

The Saskatchewan government donated $250,000 to the Canadian Red Cross for famine relief in the African Horn.

As of August 2011, more than 29,000 children under the age of five have been killed due to the drought and famine, according to U.S. estimates.

And as many as 38 million people are facing starvation, according to estimates by the UN's World Food Programme.

The effects of the famine are still being felt in areas of Africa.

Saskatchewan Red Cross Director Cindy Fuches said the money will go a long way, helping to provide water for 250,000 people in addition to providing funding for irrigation equipment.

The cheque was presented by Corrections, Public Safety and Policy Minister Yogi Huyghebaert.

The province also previously donated to the Red Cross relief for Haiti and Japan.
