Aug 26, 2011 | 6:54 AM

The inaugural Manson Cup, the Raiders preseason scrimmage tournament, began Thursday at the Art Hauser Centre with two, heated battles.

Team Modano defeated Team Hartnell 6-0 in the first ever Manson Cup game, then Team Chipchura beat Team Phillips 5-3.

Defenceman James Bettauer scored twice for Team Modano. Carson Perreaux had a goal and an assist. Luke Mahura, Jesse Knowler and Norwegian Jonas Knutsen also added goals.

Two scraps took place in this game as well as the two Austin’s, Connor and Bourhis dropped the mitts with each other, Dustin Skilliter and Rhett Law also duked it out.

In Thursday’s second game, Team Chipchura’s Tim Vanstone lead the way scoring two goals in Chip’s 5-3 win. Vanstone is a third-round choice of the Raiders this season and along with scoring the pair, he was also very physical and relentless on the forecheck.

Shane Danyluk had two points from Team Chipchura, a goal and an assist while Sheldon Argent and Andrew Herle also scored.

For Team Phillips, Justin Maylan had a goal and an assist. Newly drafted European defenceman Kristaps Bazevics and Michael Laronge also scored for Phillips.

Team Modano will take on Team Chipchura Friday at 9 a.m. while Team Hartnell will face-off against Team Phillips at 10:30 a.m..

Team Modano will then face Team Phillips at 4 p.m. then Team Hartnell will take on Team Chipchura at 5:45 p.m.

Friday August 26th

Team Chipchura raised its record to 2-and-0 with a 5-1 verdict over team Modano on Friday morning. In both Friday morning sessions all teams spent entire periods on the power play and went 4-on-4 in the final frames.

The Modano outfit was held scoreless during their period long man advantage while Chipper's crew counted goal on a blast from the point by 15 year old Taylor Fisher and a top shelf snipe by Raider returnee Todd Fiddler. P-A boy Sawyer Lange ripped a low writer from the point to make it 3-0 in the third and set up a late period tally by Braeden Farge. Overager James Bettauer potted the lone goal for Modano on a nice individual effort. Bettauer contiunes to make a strong bid for one of the three 20 year old spots on the team.

Withe the loss Team Modano falls to 1-and-1.

In the other Friday morning game Team Phillips scored a 4-3 shootout decision over Team Hartnell. The Hartnell's jumped out to a 3-0 lead converting on three power play goals during their period with the man advantage.

Rhett Law, overager Brandon Herrod and Austin Bourhis were the marksmen but the Phillips crew countered with a pair of top shelf power play snipes by overage veteran Justin Maylan who completed the hat trick late in the third period 4-and-4 session beating Goalie Eric Williams high on a clear cut breakaway. Although the Maylan “roofing company” would score another top shelf goal after a dastardly deke during the shootout, it was 15 year old Matt Lueken who settled the circus with a snap shot to the bottom corner.

The victory evens the Phillipian's record at 1-and-1 while the hard luck Hartnell's are winless in two starts.

Off ice, two overage forwards have yet to hit the ice in camp games. Last year's leading scorer Jonathan Parker is sitting out because of neck surgery that has kept him from training for three weeks. Meanwhile Charles Wells is still recovering from an ankle injury.

The first game of Friday afternoon was a tight close checking affair until the final period when team Modano broke it open with four ananswered goals and went on to beat team Phillips 6-2. 15 year old Spencer Meyer got the juggernaught going coverting a nice give and go in close with Jessie Knowler who would add a goal and another assist. Knowler was in on the second goal of the period from 20 year old defenseman James Bettauer whose seeing eye slapper from the point went in off the post. Earlier he surprised goalie Brendan Fiebelkorn with a high rising wrister from a sharp angle. However Fiebelkorn would redeem himself moments later with a hilite reel glove save off Carson Perrault. The final goal of the game went to veteran defenseman Harrison Ruopp who finished off a nice pass from Justin Maylan. Troy Petrick also scored for Phillips, while Kaiden Tobin banked a shot in off Ruopp to get the Modano's on the board. It was a good effort from the likes of youngsters such as Meyer, Perrault and Matt Wasylenko who has been steady on the Modano blue line. Their record is now 2-and-1 while team Phillips falls to 1-and-2. However Bettauer continues to be the offensive story of camp. The overage blue liner has five goals in three outings making a huge statement that he wants to be one of the three 20 year olds in the opening night line up.

Unbeaten team Chipchura got off to a quick start of the final game of Friday jumping into a 2-0 lead. Tanner LeSann opened the scoring after some good work in deep by line mates Sheldon Argent and Sebastian Auray. Braden Farge would make it 2-0 a few minutes later. However team Hartnell would get on the board when Brock Balson finished off a sweet goal mouth feed from Mike Winther. The first period would end 2-1 team Chipchura.

They would extend that lead to 3-1 when Shane Danyluk went top shelf on goalie Rylan Parenteau, but the Hartnell's would get back on the baord when the line of Winther, Herrod and Balson would connect again, this time Mike Winther was the finisher to make it a one goal game. Herrod would tie the contest in the final minute of the middle stanza on a low shot to the stick side of goalie Taryn Phaneuf after some strong forechecking from Balson  The teams headed to the dressing room tied at 3.

Goals by Corey Kosloski and overager Andrew Herle gave team Chipchura a 5-3 lead and that would be it for the scoring. The win means team Chipchura finishes the round robin at 3-and-0 while the Hartnell's went 0-and-3. They meet again at 9 o'clock Saturday morning in one semi final while 2-and-1 team Modano meets 1-and-2 team Phillips in the 10:30 semi final. The losers battle for bronze at 4pm Saturday with the Manson Cup final between the Saturday morning victors is set for 5:45.

In another injury footnote, veteran Austin Connor tweaked his shoulder in the opening game fight with Austin Bourhis and sat out Saturday's games for team Modano.

It's semi final Saturday at the Manson Cup (Raider training camp tournament) with Team Chipchura (3-0) against Team Hartnell (0-3)

Chipchura goalie Luc Lee-Knight stole the show early with great saves off Brandon Herrod on a rebound and Matt Berry from close range during a Hartnell power play setting the stage for Sebastien Auray's power play marker to give the Chipchura's a 1-0 lead. The 2010 9th round pick patiently waited for goalie Eric Williams to go down and went top shelf in the final minute of the first period.

The Hartnell's would tie the game about 7 minutes into the second, when Herrod beat Lee-Knight five hole on a clear cut breakaway. That goal came after Williams foiled Colby Daniels doing the splits to take away a wide open net on the surprised 17 year old.  However Todd Fiddler would restore the 1 goal lead for team Chipchura popping home an Andrew Herle rebound after he hit the post following a hard move to the net with just over two minutes left in the second period.

The Havrtnell`s would tie the game about two minutes into the 3rd period on a power play goal by Mathew Eagletail. However, the pace and intensity would pick up after Tanner LeSann`s sensational go ahead goal for the Chipchura`s. The 16 year old walk-on would roof a backhaner on goalie Rylan Parenteau with a defenseman hanging all over him. LeSann would also drop the gloves and battle with 16 year old Josh Odelein moments later.

Herrod threw two big hits on rookie Josh Morrissey and others on Tim Vanstone and Hudson Friesen with the game on the line and forced goalie Taryn Phaneuf to make a big glove save with about two minutes to go. Phaneuf also robbed Mike Winther from close range and Brock Balson from just outside the crease with the Hartnell`s pressing with six attackers in the final thirty seconds.

Team Chipchura held on for the 3-2 win and advances to the Manson Cup final at 5:45pm. Team Hartnell will play the loser of the upcoming Phillips vs Modano match up for Bronze at 4 o`clock. The winner of that game with take on the Chipchura clan for the cup.

The second semi final of the morning has Team Modano (2-1) vs Team Phillips (1-2). The Phillips` would jump out to a quick 2-0 lead on a pair of goals by Kristaps Bazevics. His first wrist shot from the left point would bank in off a Modano leg in the opening minute and his second would surprise a screened Matt Zentner about 30 seconds later. All that stood in the way of an early 3-0 lead on a blast by Mark McNeill was the crossbar. However, McNeill would find twine about five minutes later with a quick low snap shot from close range and the first period would end 3-0 Phillips.

The Modano mob would get on the board about two minutes into the middle frame when 17 year old free agent Jessie Knowler who has had a strong camp would snipe a rebound past goalie Brendan Fieblekorn. Dustin Skilliter would make it a one goal game ripping home a shot from the right wing while using Jonas Knutsen as a 2-on-1 decoy. Knutsen has improved with every camp game.

However, Mark McNeill would seal the deal for team Phillips with his second of the game. His high snap shot from the left wing circle on a 2-on-1 with Justin Mayland breaking for the net would be the final goal of the game which ended 4-2 Phillips.

That means It`s Phillips vs Chipchura for the the Manson Cup at 5:45 this afternoon. In their only other meeting on day one of camp Chipper`s crew prevailed 5-3 with a pair of unanswered third period goals.

The Bronze medal match at 4pm has team Modano vs Hartnell. In the camp opener the Modano`s won 6-0

Bronze medal game Modano (2-2) vs Hartnell (0-4)

2010 2nd rond pick Luke Mahura got Modano up 1-0 early with a quick snap shot that beat goalie Cole Holowenko low stick side, but the Hartnell's got back on even terms with less than 3 minutes to go in the first period on a snipe from the slot by Reagan Yew.. The period ended 1-1 despite team Hartnell leading 16-8 in shots.

The Modano mob connected for three unanswered goals in the first half of the second period. Free agent Carson Perreaux of Brandon snapped a short side shot into the top corner as he caught Rylan Parenteau pulling off the post anticipating a pass. Jonas Knutson then deflected a James Bettauer point shot past Parenteau and then Jessie Knowler converted a Knutsen rebound on a shot Parenteau had difficulty controlling. Mike Winther would get Hartnell a goal closer finishing after great grinding down low by Herrod but Chance Braid would restore Modano's 3 goal lead after cycling nicely with Knowler. The 17 year old capped a strong game hitting the bottom corner from the right wing circle. The second period would end with team Modano leading 5-2.

TJ Constant would rip a wrister that popped the water battle off the net behind Matt Zentner on an early third period 2-on-1 to pull team Hartnell back to within two, but defensive breakdowns would be their undoing a few minutes later as Knowler would hit the top corner on a prone Eric Williams and Suede Omeasoo (best name in camp) would do the same rounding out the scoring and making the final 7-3 Modano. However Herrod would have the final say with a few more solid hits including a doozy on Matt Wasylenko.

Up next team Chipchura (4-0) vs team Phillips (2-2) for the Manson Cup.

Just one goal in a very competitve first period as 2011 third round pick Tim Vanstone of Swift Current converted a goal mouth feed just 3 minutes into the game while Team Chipchura got solid goaltending from P-A boy Taryn Phanuef to carry a 1-0 lead into the second period. Phaneuf made 15 saves before being replaced at the halway point.

Team Phillips would tie the game in the final minute of the second period after getting a bounce from a point shot right on to the stick of Justin Maylan who swept a quick shot into an open net. That set the stage for 1st round draft choice Reid Gardiner. He made his first two goals of camp count with the winner on a goal mouth scramble four minutes into the third period and added the insurance marker with 11 minutes to go defelcting a Kristaps Bazevics shot from the point.

The deal sealer for Phillips came after some McNeil magic. He was stopped on two consecutive dangles through traffic to the front of the net, but on the second one Leslie Doore was in perfect position to pop the puck into a wide open net, to I guess, close the “Doore” on team Chipchura. Thier best chances to pull closer came in the final two minutes, much of it with their goalie pulled, but Phillips netminder Ty Reichenback held the fort under some intense pressure until time ran out.

The 4-1 setback was the lone loss of the tournament for the Chipchura's. Now the coaching staff will trim the camp roster in time for Sunday's intersquad game with considerable competition at all positions. Opening face off is at 1pm at the Art Hauser Centre.
