Team Saskatchewan lead by three locals to national lacrosse medal

Team Saskatchewan received a silver medal on the B Side at the STX Bantam Lacrosse Championship of Canada Aug. 1-6 in Whitby, ON, and three Prince Albert residents had a lot to do with that.

Arliss McCloy, Connor Toporowski and Braelen Frenette were all on the team that earned the national medal and were big keys as McCloy was tied for the team lead in goals with seven and Frenette and Toporowski were important on the defensive end, according to Team Saskatchewan assistant coach Darryl Frenette.

“They played their roles well,” said Frenette. “What they were there for, they did it well.

“I think that`s what we expected from our team, we expected them to finish at the top of their tier.”

Team Sask. lost their last game for the B Side gold against Manitoba 6-2, a team they previously had beaten in the round robin 9-6.

Although Frenette said the team was a little disappointed and would have loved to walk away with gold medals instead, the week went very well.

“We had a great time, great team and we got along very well,” said Frenette. “Excellent experience, the kids will never forget it.”

Team Sask. beat Quebec 6-5 and beat up on two Maritime teams, New Brunswick 12-3 and Newfoundland and Labrador 14-2. They lost to Nova Scotia 4-3, Alberta 8-7, Ontario 19-2 and Iroquois 15-1.

Along with lacrosse, Frenette said the team was able to take part in a few tourist attractions in the Greater Toronto Area, including a visit to Canada’s Wonderland amusement park and the Hockey Hall of Fame.
