Canine officer sniffs out smelly suspect

A 46-year-old man picked the wrong hiding spot Saturday, while attempting to avoid arrest.

The man was found in a back alley garbage bin by canine officer Kal. The arrest was made in the area of 25th Street and Fourth Avenue West.

Earlier that morning, the man was seen driving a vehicle at a high rate of speed, but police could not locate him and the vehicle was found abandoned a short time later.

Upon further investigation, police also located a small amount of methamphetamine. The man has been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, failing to stop for police, and possession of a controlled substance.

Other police weekend highlights

A potentially tragic incident was thwarted by police early Sunday morning.

Around 4 a.m. a woman armed with edged weapons was encountered by officers near Second Avenue and 24th Street West According to police, the woman appeared to be having a mental health crisis, and was deemed a risk to herself and the public.

When initial attempts to disarm her using communication failed, one of the officers discharged their conductive energy device.

The woman was treated in hospital for minor injuries and later connected to supports through the police crisis team (PACT).

The Prince Albert Police Service is also investigating an incident in which the Giant Tiger on 32nd Street West was damaged by a gunshot. Police were dispatched to the area just after 4 a.m. Friday.

Upon further investigation, police also located ammunition, various knives, and a sawed-off firearm in connection with this incident. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers.
