Indigenous history room adds another display

The Prince Albert Historical Society has made another addition to their Indigenous history room.

They now have enlarged archival photos displayed on one of the walls.

Manager and curator Michelle Taylor said they are happy with how everything came out.

“It’s very striking, we weren’t sure in the proofs how it would turn out … and when we got it up this morning it looks spectacular,” she said.

Taylor explained the pictures are large enough so people can see the details in them. Putting the new display together saw the P.A. Historical Society team up with Northern Saskatchewan Archives in La Ronge to supplement the local collection.

Specifically, the northern archive had photos of some Dené peoples, which added an important element to the exhibit.

“The Dené people are here, but we don’t have a lot of photos depicting early timeframes,” she said.

In selecting the photos, Taylor tried to find ones which depicted early life and showed people carrying out everyday activities. Once the images were found she took them to the museum’s knowledge keepers who provided their feedback, and that helped make the overall photo display more representative.

“They provided me with suggestions about which picture they liked or disliked, if there was one tribal group that was more commonly represented,” she said.

The photo display complements the museum’s Indigenous history room, which also features murals done by Leah Dorian and Kevin Pee-Ace. The murals showcase the history of Métis and First Nations peoples in the area.

The newest display was made possible due to support from the Northern Lights Community Development Corporation and Taylor said they add more to the Indigenous history room as resources become available.

“We’ve just been putting pieces in as we can afford them basically,” she said.
